Year of Establishment

The Department of Anthropology was established in the year 2003.

Courses Offered

Offering B.Sc. MAJOR with/without research (Four years) & MINOR course in Anthropology as per NEP 2020 (Academic Session 2026–2027) designed by Vidyasagar University, offering a holistic understanding of the study of humans. B.Sc. Anthropology (Major) is offered with two (Minor) subjects – Geography / Zoology / Physiology / Botany / Computer Science / Chemistry. Multidisciplinary B.Sc. and B.A. students can take Anthropology as a combination subject.

At present the department has an intake capacity of 22 students per year.

Other Courses Offered by the Department

• Travel and Tourism Management (TTM), one year add-on certificate course.
• One add-on course titled ‘Local Heritage of the Undivided Medinipur District’.
• A two-year regular co-educate fully job-oriented Post Graduate course, MSW, affiliated to Vidyasagar University, currently offered by the college, for which Anthropology is the foundation subject at undergraduate level.

• Well-equipped class rooms and laboratory (for Biological Anthropology and Archaeological Anthropology).
• A well-equipped museum, local heritage collection and preservation centre.
• Departmental computers and laptops available for students’ regular academic studies, fieldwork studies and project work.
• A departmental seminar library with numerous text and reference books, plus a collection of e-books and journals on departmental computers.
• The department runs a wall-magazine “Aneswan”.
• Wi-Fi supported department.

• Teaching includes ICT-supported regular classes and student seminars with PPT presentations.
• Remedial class, home assignments and internal assessment.
• Several intensive fieldwork and regular outreach programmes.
• Immersive research-oriented fieldwork covering tribal and caste populations, rural and urban population studies, health and nutrition, Anthropology of crafts, Anthropology of folklore, religious tourism and many more.
• Participation in different co-curricular activities like NSS, NCC, UBA and other voluntary services.
• Regular interaction between students and teachers, and counselling outside the classroom for academic improvement and personal well-being.
• Internship opportunities – Government and Non-Government organizations.

Results and Achievements

• Very low dropout rate and high enrolment rate for the next level of higher education.
• A good number of students secure first class in their final result every year.
• In the last five years, two students have been awarded the University Gold Medal at UG level for standing first with first class in Honours.

A degree in Anthropology can serve as a stepping stone for diverse career pathways, with good employment opportunities after completion of UG and PG degrees, especially in various government and government-aided institutions and NGOs.

• Academic / Education Sector: Assistant Professor at various colleges by CSC, Assistant Teacher at schools by SSC.
• Public Sector / Government Sectors: Researcher roles in the Anthropological Survey of India (ASI), Cultural Research Institute (CRI), Sports Authority of India (SAI), Tribal Research Institutes, and the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Ministry of Rural Development / Panchayet and Rural Development Department, Ministry of Health / Health & Family Welfare Department, Backward Classes Welfare Department.
• International Organisations: Direct avenues to work with UNESCO, UNICEF, WHO and the World Bank on social development and health projects.
