About the College

Mahishadal Girls’ College is the Grant‑in‑Aided Women College in the District Purba Medinipur, established on 1st August, 1969. It was the first women’s college in the district of Purba Medinipur. With an aim of imparting higher education among girl students of the locality as well as other parts of this district and adjoining districts, and to uplift and enhance their status, some local affluents – Late Dr. Satyendranath Bhunia, M.B., Late Rabindranath Singha, Late Dr. Haridas Sarkar, Late Gopal Chandra Mondal and many other eminent personalities of the locality – took this glorious initiative.

The college started its journey from a rented building in Rathtala, Mahishadal, with a modest number of staff members and students. In 2003, the college was shifted to Rangibasan village, about 1 km away from its previous location. Previously, in July 1969, the college was affiliated to the University of Calcutta.

Mahishadal Girls’ College is known for its diverse academic offerings, catering to students across multiple disciplines. Presently the college offers various UG programmes (Major / Minor / Multidisciplinary) under Vidyasagar University, and the introduction of the PG course in Master of Social Work has added an extra feather to the academic journey of the college. The college also provides students with some rare opportunities of non‑formal training.

Location & Surroundings

The college is situated at Rangibasan, by the side of Mahishadal–Geonkhali link Road, near ‘Satish Samanta Halt’ Railway Station, one kilometre away from Mahishadal Cinema Morh. Mahishadal is mainly famous for the Mahishadal Raj Estate and its Rathajatra festival – a grandeur next only to the ‘Mahesh’ Rathajatra of Srirampur (Hooghly). Besides, many historical events took place on the soil of Mahishadal, especially during the Indian Freedom struggle, of which it was an important theatre.

Alike Mahishadal, nearby Geonkhali is also a famous tourist spot. It stands at the confluence of the rivers Rupanarayan, Hooghly and Haldi, just opposite the Diamond Harbour Sub‑Division of South 24 Parganas and Howrah. Mahishadal is well connected with different parts of Bengal, and beyond, by both rail and road. This small town has also gained importance as a hinterland of Haldia Port, a flourishing industrial and seaport town with a bright prospect.
