About the Department
The Department of English, established in 1969, is one of the oldest and most distinguished departments of Mahishadal Girls' College. Over more than five decades, the department has remained committed to academic excellence, critical inquiry, and holistic student development. It offers a vibrant intellectual environment where students engage with British, American, Indian, Commonwealth and World Literatures, Literary Theory, Linguistics, Cultural Studies, Translation Studies and other interdisciplinary areas of learning under the framework of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The department strives to nurture articulate, socially responsible and intellectually curious learners through innovative teaching methods, research-oriented learning and a range of co-curricular and extension activities. Alongside regular academic programmes, students are encouraged to participate in seminars, literary events, creative writing, theatre, community engagement and skill development initiatives that prepare them for higher education and diverse professional careers.
