Diffusing higher education and history-consciousness among the students of the region since 1st August, 1969.

Year of Establishment

With the dream of diffusing higher education and making the students of the region history conscious, the Department of History was opened up with the initiation of this college on 1st August, 1969.

Courses Offered

Offering B.A. MAJOR with/without research (Four Years) & MINOR course in History as per NEP 2020 (Academic Session 2026–2027) designed by Vidyasagar University.

Mode of Teaching, Learning and Evaluation

Apart from the traditional Chalk and Talk method, the faculty of the department have also been following various other methods to help make its learners quality students. In order to do so, the department provides e-learning methods, audio-visual methods, special classes, and organizes student seminars, debates, quizzes, poster competitions, academic tours, field work and the publication of a wall magazine, based on the stipulated university syllabus, on a regular basis. The department also conducts an Eligibility Test at the very beginning of a new session to gauge the strengths and weaknesses of newly admitted students, which usually helps a great deal in identifying slow learners and smart learners. Faculty members regularly conduct tutorials, periodical assessments and class tests to track the progression and performance of students. The performance of teachers is likewise assessed through innovative practices, the Mentor–Mentee relationship and extra-curricular activities, recorded in the department’s diary.

Support Services

In order to help students achieve their best, the teachers and the institution together provide study materials, reference lists, e-materials, books and journals from both the Departmental Library and the College Central Library. Besides these, students can avail of the book bank facility, question bank facility, historical maps and chronological charts, remedial classes and special classes as and when required.

Mission and Vision

The stakeholders of the department always intend to offer a Post-Graduate programme in History, along with various UGC Add-On Courses and research and experimental facilities in any as-yet-untrodden area of history. The department is also keen to provide guidance on “Entry in Service” as an innovative practice, to assist students in finding their livelihood in the near future. In a word, the mission and vision of the faculty members is to establish the department as a leading and quality department, both within the college and among the colleges of the University.
