Year of Establishment

The Department of Sanskrit is one of the strongest departments in Mahishadal Girls’ College, which opened on 8th January, 1969. At that time it was taught as a Pass subject. The Honours course in this subject started from 20th June, 2002 in our college.

Intake Capacity

At present the department has an intake capacity of 35 (Gen–15, EWS–3, OBC–6, SC–8, ST–2, PWD–1) students per year.

Aims & Objectives

Since inception the department has remained engaged in popularizing the study of Sanskrit language and literature in the region. The particular objectives of the Department of Sanskrit are to guide and assist the students in the pursuit of knowledge in various disciplines of Sanskrit Language and Literature. The goal of this department is to foster self-confidence and create opportunities for the younger generation, enabling them to discover new paths of wisdom.

Faculties

The department currently has five faculty members. Dr. Basudev Panda is the Head of the Department, and the other faculty members are Smt. Sulekha Maity, Smt. Debasri Das Maity, Dr. Surajit Samanta and Dr. Puspendu Dash.

Specialities & Facilities

• The department organizes Seminars, Workshops, Lecture Programs, Debates and Quiz sessions from time to time to enrich the students with curriculum beyond the syllabus.
• The departmental Wall Magazine named “Shraddharghyam” is published every year to inspire the learners through the publication of their own writings and drawings.
• The department celebrates many cultural and innovative programs throughout the year, such as Fresher’s Welcome, World Sanskrit Day, International Yoga Day, Teachers’ Day and Farewell.
• Every day begins with Saraswati Vandana and Vedic chanting, performed by the students and teachers before the start of classes – one of the best practices of the department.
• The department has a departmental Seminar Library with more than 200 books, which students can access freely when needed.
• The department arranges an Educational Tour every year.
• Faculty members regularly participate in different Seminars, Workshops and Conferences to improve their teaching skills in higher education.
• The department endeavours to help students apply the core knowledge of ancient Sanskrit literature to their own field of interest or expertise, with a vision that they can lead the world towards better opportunities and a positive environment across all streams of knowledge.
• Many students have passed out from the department and distinguished themselves in various walks of life – the department has inherited a very rich academic tradition as a result.
• Students can participate in different co-curricular activities like NSS, NCC, UBA and other voluntary services.
• Wi-Fi supported department, with a departmental laptop available for students’ regular academic studies and project writing.

Other Courses Offered by the Department

• Ten-day Spoken Sanskrit Workshop, a certificate course.
• One Add-on course titled ‘Translation, Proof Reading & Computation’, a 30-hour certificate course.
